The Merrymac Farm Sanctuary is a well established Farm Sanctuary in Charlotte, Vermont that is part of the GFAS (Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries) accredited network of Sanctuaries around the globe working on Animal Welfare Education and the protection of neglected and abused farm animals.
If you love animals and want to make the world a more compassionate place for all living beings, consider applying for an internship at Merrymac Farm Sanctuary. We offer Internships each semester of college as well as a summer program.
We are looking for passionate and talented people to join our Animal Care team. Each day you will help with our day to day operations in all of our animal care zones. MMFS is dedicated to teaching and mentoring those interested in Animal Welfare, Pre-Vet, Animal therapy, Humane Education and other careers with animals.
Internships at MMFS offer the unique opportunity of working at a farmed animal sanctuary with over 100+ animals. Species include horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, cows, turkeys, ducks, chickens, rabbits, and pigs.
You will:
Learn from and interact with our animal residents
Learn to triage a large scale diverse farm with varied animal species
Work with like-minded people who are committed to animal welfare
Gain experience for future employment and life
Make professional contacts and references
Have the potential for academic credit
About Internships:
Internships are unpaid positions
Typical internships are 12 week blocks and require a minimum commitment of 20+ hours per week. Generally shifts are two mornings during the weekdays from 7:30am-1:00pm
Fall Internship Late Aug-Dec
Spring Internship Jan- May
Summer May- Aug
Candidates should be opposed to animal cruelty in all forms, and support MMFS’s mission
Vegans and vegetarians are encouraged to apply
Internships are available year round, and positions are filled on an ongoing basis as applications are received.
Interns will submit a proposal for area of study and goals to be accomplished during the internship
Work Environment:
Animal care interns will work in an outdoor barn setting with exposure to the elements
All interns may be exposed to allergens including feathers, fur, and dander from farm animals
Animal care interns will be required to engage in physical farm labor up to and including standing and walking for extended periods of time, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Strong observational and communication skills are required
